Governor Gavin Newsom of California signed a measure on Saturday requiring new small off-road engines to be zero-emission by 2024. The bill includes $30 million in financing to assist with the transition. According to the California Air Resources Board, using a gas leaf blower for an hour produces the same amount of smog-forming pollutants as driving a Toyota Camry 1,100 miles. California has become the latest state to prohibit home lawnmowers from using gas-powered leaf blowers. According to an industry official, a commercial electric lawnmower can cost more than twice as much as a gas lawnmower and often performs worse. Customers may face higher charges as a result of the law, according to the National Association of Landscape Professionals.
